- mosaics
- Pictures formed by inserting small pieces of coloured tiles of glass or marble into walls or floors; not a Hebrew skill and not mentioned in the OT, which prohibited all images of God. But some examples of mosaic work were discovered at Masada from the period of Herod the Great, and in grand 1st-cent. houses recently excavated in Jerusalem; and Jewish synagogues in a more liberal age of the 4th cent. CE used the decoration. The best Christian examples of the art are the mosaics in several churches in and near Ravenna, Italy, dating from the 6th cent., which portray a regal, Byzantine, Christ.
